Been going back and forth on this for a while now and figured I would just ask instead of guessing. I mostly fish shallow flats and grass beds, usually under 6 feet of water, and my folding anchor has been driving me a little crazy lately. It drags more than it should, takes a few tries to actually catch, and every time I toss it I end up drifting off the spot I was trying to hold. On sight fishing days that has cost me a few fish that spooked the second the anchor hit the water.

I keep seeing people mention stake out anchor poles as the fix for this, but I have never used one, so I have some honest questions before I spend the money.

Does it actually hold as well as people say in mud or grass bottoms, or is that mostly hype? How much of a pain is it to store on the kayak, especially if you already run a crate, rod holders, and a fish finder? Does a 7 foot pole cover most shallow situations, or do people end up wishing they went longer or shorter? And for those of you who fish a mix of shallow and deep water, are you just carrying a pole and a traditional anchor together, or did you fully switch over?

Also curious about bottom type. I fish mostly grass and soft mud, occasionally some sandier patches near the bank. Does the pole still perform well there, or does bottom type make a bigger difference than expected?

Would appreciate any real world input before I pull the trigger on one. Trying to figure out if this is genuinely a better system for shallow water or just another gadget that sounds better than it performs.
